Meteorite crater hoax?

A meteorite allegedly made landfall in Latvia, but a scientist from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (Uldis Nulle) isn’t so sure. He claims the crater is a bit too symmetrical to indicate a meteor. He thinks the landowner dug the hole and then lit some kind of pyrotechnic in the center to make it look smokey.

If this is a hoax, somebody went to a bit of trouble to make it. I mean, how did someone dig the hole without leaving evidence of heavy machinery? Are they suggesting a few guys with shovels dug the hole? Seems like more questions than answers here. Stay tuned.
