OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT NEOTROPICAL ORNITHOLOGISTS
The Association of Field Ornithologists is hoping to increase involvement with Neotropical ornithologists through a new initiative. When you renew your AFO membership for 2012, you will have the opportunity to contribute one or more memberships for Latin American ornithologists. At the very reasonable price of $15, please consider sponsoring one or more Latin American memberships when you receive your renewal form from OSNA in October 2011. AFO will provide free membership, including an online subscription to the Journal of Field Ornithology to a Latin American ornithologists, either a student or a professional, for each membership sponsored.

The NAOC-V Scientific Program is very pleased to announce that the Four Plenary speakers have now been chosen, Fiona Schmiegelow (Can), Peter Marra (USA), Roxanna Torres (MX) and Irby Lovette (USA). Their topics and bios are given on the website.
Pre-registration is now available via the website for those planning to attend NAOC-V. Pre-registering will enable you to be the first to receive news and updates via email and will assist the organizing committees in planning the conference. Highlights from the October issue:
PROPOSED NEW SOCIETY FOR ORNITHOLOGY–The AOU Council unanimously approved a motion to move forward with planning to form a new society, with ultimate hopes of uniting and strengthening Western Hemisphere ornithology. The plan could involve a merger of AOU and one or more other ornithological societies into a western hemisphere ornithological society tentatively named the Society for Ornithology. Four new journals are in the plans–monthly online journals and quarterly journals in paper format, with the focus varying from cutting edge basic research to descriptive ornithology and including a journal on avian conservation and management.
